Sending money home: Transaction cost and remittances to developing countries

Reducing the cost of remitting is one targets within 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 10). A key factor that causes migrants to use informal channels when sending money back home high transferring funds through formal channels. This study examines whether and what extent reduction in remittances increases flow developing countries, larger amounts are remitted per transaction decreases (the so-called scale effect). It uses bilateral data on remittance flows exploits a novel dataset covering costs for 30 75 receiving countries period 2011–2017. gravity model estimated using panel instrumental variable techniques address endogeneity issues.
